Binsar Bakkara is a photojournalist based in Medan, North Sumatra, Indonesia. He is both a freelance journalist as well as a photo stringer for The Associated Press since 2005.

Living in a country that is frequently rocked by earthquakes and volcanoes, Mr. Bakkara is familiar with disaster coverage. He has covered many critical events, starting with the 2004 mega tsunami that killed more than 200,000 people along the coast of the Indian Ocean. He is also active covering other issues, including conflict, the impact of environmental damage, human rights violations, and daily life events around him.

Specific photographic works by Binsar include covering the Rohingya people fleeing Myanmar, the impact of bird flu, injustice against workers on oil palm plantations, pollution in Lake Toba due to fish farming, orangutans and pangolins that have been endangered due to forest destruction, and many other important issues  - certainly not to forget the Covid-19 pandemic.

Many of Binsar's photographs have been published in international media. He has received several journalism awards, as well as being a frequent speaker at seminars due to his extensive experience.
